Explaining UN Sustainable Development Goal #7 - Affordable & Clean Energy

The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number seven is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. This goal recognizes the fundamental importance of energy in achieving economic and social development, reducing poverty, and improving the quality of life for people around the world.

Access to modern energy services is essential for achieving many of the other SDGs, such as ending poverty, promoting sustainable economic growth, combating climate change, and ensuring access to clean water and sanitation. However, around 789 million people worldwide lack access to electricity, and 2.8 billion people rely on traditional biomass, like wood, for cooking and heating, which causes indoor air pollution and contributes to deforestation.Heavy reading ahead. • Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services.

  • Increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

  • Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

  • Enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology.

Achieving these targets requires a concerted effort from governments, private sector, civil society, and individuals.
Governments must create enabling policies and regulations that support the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies and promote energy efficiency. They also need to increase investments in the energy sector, particularly in off-grid and rural areas where access to electricity is limited.

Energy companies can invest in renewable energy projects and technologies and adopt sustainable business practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Private sector investments can help create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve energy access for marginalized communities.

As an industry, we can also play a crucial role in achieving SDG 7, raising awareness about the importance of energy access and sustainability and reducing our own energy consumption in the salon, switching to renewable energy sources, and supporting initiatives that promote energy access for all. By working together, we can build a sustainable energy future that benefits everyone.
